Tired of hearing and seeing women being exposed of their dignity. It makes me sick to my stomach to know how cruel and inconsiderate some men can be. In life we are supposed to be treated like the queens that we are, instead we are being dominated by the male species.

Women all over the world are sexually violated every single day, especially in Africa. Blessed with beauty, women are objectified as sex objects in the male eyes. Based off of the male gaze, women become use to being looked at by men. The question is are the men gazing to long. In recent studies it shows that “a woman is raped every 26 seconds in South Africa,” according to local aid groups. Not only is this happening in South Africa, but across the world. It is very unfortunate that women are being forced to participate in unwanted acts.

The latest gang rape in Africa has hit the news with shocking video. A 17-year-old girl, who is assumed to be mentally ill was kidnapped and rapped by 8 suspects. Four of which are minors, three adult teenagers and one 37-year-old man. The young teenage girl went missing from home on March 21. As police were notified, they suspected that “she was kidnapped and turned into a sex slave.” When the video went viral the footage consisted of the girl “pleading for her attackers to stop.” The suspects were detained, but the four minors are temporarily out on a $ 67 bail. The recent rape victim has experienced being raped twice before, and authorities did very little to address the situation, according to the victims mother. Luckily, these suspects were caught.

Last year in Africa, “more than 60,000 cases of sexual assault were reported in the year to March 2011, down from 70,000 in 2008,” police said.  With reports like this, how are woman suppose to feel safe in their living environment? My heart goes out to the women of Africa and every of other woman who has ever been rapped in the world. It’s a disgrace to know how desperate and horny men can be. No care that they are endangering the lives of innocent people and bringing harm to others health. Everyday is a worry and I wish them no luck in life.

IMHO

Newborn babies blossoms into the world everyday. They are the cutest, most adorable creations made. As we hear them cry so frequently, we cant help but tend to their tears. In recent news, Knoxville hospital hears the “heart-wrenching cries echo through the halls of the neonatal intensive care unit.” Most of these newborn babies are suffering from prescription drug withdrawal.

This is a neonatal abstinence syndrome (Nas), which is a syndrome that babies go through after in “utero exposure to certain medications.”  Newborn babies are exposed to this syndrome by narcotics that are being used during pregnancy, which passes through the placenta to the baby. After the baby is born the drugs are no longer in the body of the newborn and this causes the baby to go through withdrawal. “Between 55% and 94% of babies exposed to opioids prior to birth exhibits signs of withdrawal according to the American Academy of Pediatrics.”

I hate to see newborn babies suffer for something their parents did before the birth of their child. It isn’t fair that an innocent soul have to deal with the consequences for something they had no say so in. What bothers me the most is mothers know that they should not be drinking or taking any drugs (prescription or not), because of the chances that there newborn baby will have some sort of birth defect. Through recent health surveys Tennessee health department found that “about a third of pregnant women in state treatment programs are addicted to prescription pain meds.”

The babies who are exposed to this syndrome can get “easily agitated and cry constantly, and many cannot be near sound and light.” Other symptoms that occur include tightening of the muscles and seizures. According to CNN they concur, “While prescription drug abuse is a problem in nearly every neighborhood in America, it is particularly epidemic in Tennessee, which ranks among the top states in the overuse of prescription pain medications.”

Unfortunately, after the newborns are born, the mothers are still addicted to drugs, making it very difficult for them to take care of their child. Most newborns are then sent to foster homes because their mother cannot provide for them as needed to be.

It is such a sad story and in my humble opinion, we need to contribute to making the changes we would like to see to better the lives of innocent babies.

Japanese Internment Memorial Essay

The Japanese Internment and relocation took place in 1942. This is when Japanese Americans who lived along the pacific coast of the U.S. were shipped to camps called “War Relocation Camps” in wake of the Imperial Japan’s Attack on Pearl Harbor. These camps captured Japanese Americans and their families.

Since San Jose was one of the locations Japanese were taken from, a monument was built to show in honor the lives Japanese Americans lived during this period. Very different from the way we live our lives, these Japanese American were taken away from the normal lifestyles they were use too.  Working out in the fields, being handy, and protecting others was these Japanese American duties.

The place where they laid their head to rest were as small as cubicles. The homes for the Japanese were equally parallel to one another row after row. Families had no way to enjoy each other’s company because it was no space to do so. Since families were brought along to these camps, they were offered only a little bit of leisure activities by being able to play volleyball outside. This activity was played by of most of the children. I found this piece of the monument to be very significant. I was very surprised that this camp allowed any extra curricular activities. I’m glad that they let the children some have fun; I thought it was all work and no play for anyone.

As for the adults no play and all work, it showed their day-to-day lives. Most pieces shows of men lifting, pulling, climbing and holding guns. A lot of the monument consisted of men wearing uniforms with metal helmets guarding the outside of buildings. Almost all of these workers had big hats on. As I imagine they had to work long hours throughout the day in the sun, and the hat was there protection.

In the monument it shows the Superior court. The superior court signifies the ruling that the internment should not have happened to these Americans. They were treated unfair and had their privileges had been taken away from them. Although this had happened these Japanese Americans had to adapt to their new living situation.

One thing that I noticed in the sculptures of the monument was that the men who were out in the field picking food and cotton worked together to get the job done. You could see the teamwork. Other things that I found interesting on the monument was these two long buses who had people lined for about a mile, holding their suitcases while waiting to get on the bus. I wonder where they where being shipped. Behind those buses, a church was located there. Not sure what kind of church it was, it just had a cross at the top of the building. I’m glad they believed in a God.

I feel that this was a very unfortunate time in history for Japanese Americans. It was unfair to the families especially to the children. In todays world I’m not sure if something like this could ever happen again, lets hope not.

Fish Out Of Water

Imagine a loud, thumping, surround sound compact bar, with the sounds of different girl rock bands performing on stage. As the guitar players intricately used their fingers, drummers exercising their arms and lead members screaming at the top of their lungs, there I stood at a Rock & Roll concert. People knit close together, barely able to walk through the crowd. Lights turned down low, as partygoers waved bright glow sticks in the air in harmonious motions. Body gestures varied with each new song. Energy began rapidly increasing with fast jumping, and head throwing’s back and forth, up and down on the bodies of those entertained. Intensity swelled as liquor filled the mouths of those lovers of rock and roll.

Being at my first rock band concert, I observed. Completely in a new environment and scenery, I enjoyed watching these others outside of my nationality have a good time.  Others were those who race included Caucasians, Hispanics and Asians. I was the only African American woman in the bar. I couldn’t allow myself to join in, as it wasn’t of my liking to give myself a headache. The band played interesting songs; I found myself randomly bobbing my head from time to time that was the most. The thoughts of someone I didn’t know pushing, shoveling and touching me bothered me. I preferred not to be touched, so I stayed close to the door just in case I needed to immediately vacate.

You would think they were commencing a riot with all the commotion they were starting. Spilled drinks surfaced the floor, the bar counter, and of course on clothes. They really know how to have a good time. With so many bodies in the building it began to get stuffy. The bar had an outdoor patio, where you could go catch some fresh air, smoke a few cigarettes, and meet new people; a very social occasion.

A way to keep their consumers coming back, they give their entire guest an option to get drunk and sober up before driving and going home. Near the patio they have a back of the house restaurant that sells inexpensive meals and non alcoholic beverages, for those who no longer want to drink or preferred not to drink in the beginning. I found this to be the best part of the night, as I tend to get hungry when I go out.

After leaving this event, I was able to see how other races have a good time. Although it wasn’t of interest to me I did enjoy seeing so much action. Everybody was very hyper active. It was a sight to see. Overall, I don’t see myself attending another Rock & Roll event like this at a bar, maybe at another location that isn’t so compact. If you’ve never been to one, I would suggest you go and try it out, you may like it.

NPR Radio interview analysis

For my interview analysis  I listened to A War With Iran: Rhetoric or a Reality? The interviewer was very knowledgeable on the war with Iran. He made sure to know as much information needed before the interview began. The interviewer Guy Raz asked the interviewee questions that surrounded Iran and the nuclear programs there. Guy Raz way of building up to the questions he tended to ask were implemented through a series of statements and arguments made previously by someone involved in the presidential election and he would ask him what do you take of that? or he would ask questions that would give opinionated answers. Followed by a follow up question.

When Guy Raz was giving his interview he didn’t seem to have a strategy. He went there for answers and thats what he got. His preparedness was all he needed to have a successful interview. When he received the answers to his questions the interviewer gave adequate answers. He was truthful in response and was knowledgeable enough to know exactly how and what to say.

Just by listening to the interview I could tell that the two had no previous relationship with one another and that the interview was strictly business. Something that I heard from this interview was no matter what the subject is even if you think you know about it, make sure you do your research. Without research you look incompetent and not passionate for the work you do. You have to get straight to the point when doing these kind of interviews. Also when possible use quotes as a way of leading the subject to a new angle and perspective.
